Urgent Response to Drought in Somalia

Challenges

Many areas suffered from a severe drought that swept Somalia in 2014, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the form of water and food shortages, which claimed the lives of a number of local residents and led to the death of large numbers of livestock.

Expectation

Providing relief to those affected by famine and food insecurity, in implementation of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud – may Allah have mercy on him – which aim to provide urgent humanitarian aid to save the lives of those affected by thirst and famine in Somalia.

Impact

Responding to the humanitarian appeal with the aim of alleviating the suffering of the residents of the affected areas by providing various food and relief supplies and securing water to support those affected by diseases resulting from drinking unclean water, in addition to rehabilitating disabled artesian wells, digging and equipping ground tanks to collect rainwater, digging and rehabilitating disabled agricultural canals, and providing pumps and electric generators to support farmers in facing the drought wave.

  • Providing 300 ground water tanks
  • Rehabilitating 13 artesian wells
  • Drilling and building 12 ground water tanks
  • Digging 4 irrigation canals
  • Rehabilitating 16 broken canals
  • Providing pumps and electric generators
