Dialysis Centers

In a compassionate gesture, the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz initiated the King Abdullah Dialysis Program in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2014, under the umbrella of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Foundation for Humanitarian Work. This humanitarian initiative was established to address a pressing healthcare need by providing high-quality, accessible, and timely dialysis services to patients, entirely at his own expense.

Indicators show that patients who bear the cost of dialysis treatments themselves spend approximately SAR 100,000 annually. As a result, this project has saved beneficiaries a total of 600 million Saudi Riyals annually.

The project commenced with 1,750 patients in its first phase and expanded to serve 6,000 patients in its final phase, covering over 45% of Saudi Arabia’s kidney failure patients. The remaining 55% are served by other healthcare facilities across the KSA (governmental, private and charitable).

Over 900,000 dialysis sessions are conducted annually.

Project Phases

Phase 1

It was launched in 2014, this phase saw the operation of three dialysis centers, two in the capital of Riyadh, and one in Jeddah.

Phase 2

In 2015, the network expanded to include a new dialysis center in Makkah.

Phase 3

Three additional centers were opened in Madinah, Hail, and Rafha (Northern Border Region)

Project Components

Healthcare

1,000 dialysis machines equipped with the latest blood purification technology.
On-site pharmacy, laboratory, examination clinics, and X-ray machines.
A fleet of vehicles for transporting patients, the needy, and individuals with special needs.
A comprehensive dialysis and patient information management and monitoring system, covering pre-, during, and post-dialysis processes.
Digital interconnection of centers to facilitate the transfer and exchange of patient information between the patient's usual treatment center and any other center.

Comprehensive Support

Facilities meeting the highest global quality standards in terms of space, location vitality, flow, equipment, and furnishings.
Reverse osmosis plants for water purification and treatment to ensure high-purity water for blood purification processes.
A secure electrical system to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the centers, supported by backup generators.
Medical gas stations supported by backup systems.
High-quality central air conditioning systems equipped with negative pressure systems for isolation patients.
High-specification warehouses equipped with refrigeration units for storing medicines, medical supplies, and operating supplies.
Office units for administration, support services, and operations.
Residential units for center staff, furnished and equipped with all services.
Information systems linked to a single network to facilitate services provided to patients and support the performance of center staff.

Support Services

In addition to ensuring the efficient operation of dialysis centers to provide enhanced medical services, include specialized treatments for anemia, vascular access, parathyroid disorders, and nutritional management, all delivered in accordance with international best practices for infection control. Furthermore, the centers provide:

Social Services

The centers provide emotional support to patients through social workers in cooperation with comprehensive rehabilitation centers affiliated with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.

Bilateral Cooperation and Research

Dialysis centers collaborate with similar associations in the scientific field by exchanging information and research results and sending specialists to attend events and participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops both domestically and internationally, with the aim of enhancing patient care.

The project is underpinned by contracts with leading companies that are efficient and experienced in providing support services, supplying medicines, medical supplies, maintenance, transportation for staff and equipment, cleaning, catering, laundry, environmental protection, and information and communication technology services, to provide all means of comfort for patients and provide them with the highest levels of medical service.
